DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE, NIKE CHAPTER #230
District #5: New Jersey and Delaware



The Cherry Hill Daughters of Penelope chapter was established 50+ years ago. They have over 80 members from the various cities and towns in and surrounding Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties.     

 

Their Mission is Philanthropy, Education, Civic/Community Service, Charity, Social and Fund Raising

Some of their endeavors have been toward the Ronald McDonald House, Dooley House, District #5 Cancer Research Foundation with grant giving to Fox Chase Cancer Center, Cancer Institute of New Jersey and other NJ Cancer Research Centers, American Heart Association,  Multiple Sclerosis,  Papanicolaou Cancer Center,  American Red Cross, Camden, NJ Children Winter Coat Drive, St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church,  Scholarship awards, St. Judes’ Ranch for Children, Food Baskets for the needy, etcetera.

 

Various functions are held to raise monies, example would be Art Shows and Fashion Shows

Socials functions include trip to Fairmont Park tours, theatre trips, Founder’s Day Dinners, x-mas holiday party, speakers at the meetings.

History of the Daughters of Penelope

The Daughters of Penelope, founded in 1929 in San Francisco, CA., is an International American-Hellenic Women's organization associated with the AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association). Today, the Daughters of Penelope is a leader in philanthropic, educational, civic and cultural activities with local chapters in the United States, Canada and Greece.

The objectives of the Daughters of Penelope are to promote the social, ethical and intellectual interests of its members; to participate in the communities through philanthropic, political, civic and educational endeavors; to cultivate the ideals and traditions of Hellenism within America, or another country in which a Chapter exists. Its mission is to promote Philanthropy, Education, Civic Responsibility, Hellenism, Family and Individual Excellence.

The Daughters of Penelope is comprised of the following components:

Chapters: Located within various cities, towns and localities throughout the United States, Canada and Greece. All Daughters of Penelope are members of local chapters, which conduct meetings and sponsor civic, educational, philanthropic, charitable and social activities. Its members elect chapter officers on an annual basis.

Some of the chapters have organized Junior auxiliaries chapters of the Daughters of Penelope called ‘Maids of Athena’  which are for young women age’s 17-23 years of age

Districts: Daughters of Penelope chapters are grouped regionally into Districts, which organize district seminars, conferences, events and fund raising drives. Delegates of the various chapters elect district officers annually at District Conventions.  District #5 has 14 chapters with over 700 members.

And on the National Level Chapter and District delegates come together on an annual basis at the National Convention to elect the international officers within United States and Canada and to promote national fund raising programs.
