Spotlight on George Burlotos
Happy New Year to each and every one of you ! As you may or may not know, I have been a lifelong member of the Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church community since before it’s inception, dating back to our days in Camden, New Jersey.
I remember the community united then as it is now. Back in the sixties, we had the forerunner of the current Saint Thomas community, the American Hellenic Orthodox Center of Camden County. Slowly and surely, with an active Greek School, we raised monies to eventually purchase the land and build the current Saint Thomas church. Later in the 70’s we added the now named Danielle Kousoulis Greek Cultural Center, obtained more property around us for parking and then constructed an educational building in this millennium, the John Balis Educational Building.
From humble beginnings to today I have been associated as an active member in a great church community. I indeed have been blessed. From my days as a Parish Council member , President of the community to my radio days and throughout my time as the producer of The Greek Spirit television program I have spent every waking moment watching this community and partaking in its best moments.
Just this past week, I spent time with our senior group, The Kali Parea, enjoyed church services throughout the holidays with Father Christoforos, attended an AHEPA lunch, saw a basketball game, rang in New Year’s Eve here and received the blessing of the Holy Water.
I proudly tell you that I am the first parishioner to move into the Saint Thomas Senior Housing next door! I am waiting for all of you to stop by.
Such an exciting time in our community! It is a community of many needs. None of this would have been possible without all of you and your assistance over the years. It is a wonderful thing to get up on a Sunday and go to church, but it just doesn’t happen by itself. That’s why we need everyone to do their part and be cheerful givers for 2016 Stewardship. Enclosed is a card. If you have not done so already, please return with your generous re-commitment to our church. Our community, as anyone can see, remains as inspired as ever in maintaining, improving and expanding its ministries. My promise I have kept to Saint Thomas over the years, What Is Yours?
Happy New Year, Y’Sas!
